Thorough disinfection helps to prevent the spread of germs, but resource constraints are real. Facilities need to adopt a cleaning and disinfection plan that is both effective AND efficient.
1. Know the difference between cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting. Determine which process is required for each surface.
2. Define what and when to disinfect. Transmission via surfaces can happen when a person touches a contaminated surface, then touches their mouth or nose. Identify commonly touched surfaces, and assess traffic in these areas to inform cleaning frequency.
3. Define who cleans what. Once you have identified the processes and cleaning frequencies required for different surfaces, define who on your staff is responsible for specific areas. This will help to ensure that efforts don’t overlap and important surfaces aren’t ignored.
