In the Event of an Emergency — From earthquakes to active shooters, custodial staff plays a vital role in disaster preparedness.
Facility managers cannot predict when disaster will strike, but if the latest headlines are any indication, they know that calamities — whether natural or manmade — can occur anytime, anywhere. And custodians may be called on to not only secure property but to protect lives.
This article will outline procedures managers should have in place before an emergency strikes.
Floor Care
Hard flooring is on the rise (over carpeting) and determining floor cleaning programs will depend on the type of flooring in place. This article will address specific chemicals needed for maintaining various flooring types. For example, in facilities where rubber flooring is installed, cleaning workers can rob the floor of its rubbery, grippy surface if cleaned incorrectly.
Vacuums
Dust lands on surfaces, whether we can reach them or not and neglected spaces can have a negative effect on indoor air quality. This article will focus on vacuum attachments specifically designed for high dusting.
Handwashing & Drying
Reducing hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) is an incentive in healthcare facilities across the country. Improving handwashing procedures among medical staff can go a long way in reducing cross-contamination, but changing habits of the staff can be difficult. This article will cover changes managers can make to cleaning programs as a way to help encourage strong hand hygiene among the nurses and doctors.
Healthy Schools
This article will feature Mervin Brewer, assistant custodial supervisor at Salt Lake City School District and a Green Clean Schools Leadership Council member from Healthy Schools Campaign. It will highlight the green cleaning program in an educational facility and what managers can do to improve perception of the cleaning profession.
Green Column
This column will be written by Mark Petruzzi, Senior Vice President of Outreach and Strategic Relations at Green Seal. It will focus on what facility cleaning executives can do to improve/support green and sustainable initiatives within their facilities.
Management Column
This column, written by ManageMen's Ben Walker, will offer solutions to management challenges Ben has witnessed while out in the field, as well as advice for overcoming cleaning challenges.
